Best Practices in Preparation for Applications Season
Summer is here, and this is actually the BEST time to start preparing for graduate school applications! With most application seasons ramping up in the Fall and deadlines typically falling in December, these warmer months and longer days provide the perfect opportunity to thoughtfully prepare without the last-minute rush. π°
We want to equip you with essential strategies to navigate the admissions process effectively, whether you're applying from your undergraduate program, transitioning from a Master's to a PhD, or returning to academia after time away.
Starting soon will give you a significant advantage!
1. Program Research (Start Now) π€π»
Use resources like GradSchoolMatch, Peterson's, and program-specific rankings to identify programs aligned with your interests
Review faculty research interests and recent publications to find potential advisors
Connect with current or former students from the programs of interest to gain insider perspectives on potential advisors, departmental culture, logistics such as stipend amounts, etc. (this is a PRO tip!)
Message potential advisors, once you have βselectedβ a few, and schedule a brief meeting with them to let them know you are thinking of applying!
2. Financial Planning π°
Make sure you keep these in mind and plan accordingly:
Application Costs: Budget $75-125 per application, plus GRE/standardized test fees (~$200+), if applicable, and transcript costs
Cost-saving strategies: Apply for application fee waivers, prioritize 5-7 carefully selected programs, and consider attending virtual open houses instead of in-person visits initially
Funding research: Identify internal fellowships, external grants, and assistantship opportunities well before applying
3. Letters of Recommendation π
Approach potential recommenders at least 8 weeks before deadlines
Provide your CV, statement drafts, and specific talking points to help them write strong letters
Watch for our upcoming detailed email on recommendation strategies!
