Our #1 Hack to get Straight A’s

Whether you are a community college student still deciding what you hope to study or are a graduate student in the latter stages of your dissertation, there is one universal truth when determining academic success.

Know what it is?

Drumroll please…

🗝️ Office hours & networking!

That's right! The most neglected and perhaps the MOST important thing you can do as a student and budding scholar is to communicate with those who can offer guidance and support. This includes your professors (or supervisor). While it may seem like an obvious resource, I can tell you from personal experience that it is greatly underutilized and is the one thing students can access that has the greatest impact on their grades (or the outcome of their research).

Why Office Hours Are Your Path to Straight A's:

  • Clear up confusion at the source. Don't waste hours struggling with a concept you don't understand when you can get direct clarification from the expert(s) who will be grading you (this applies to professors and TAs).

  • Understand expectations. Your professors write the assignments and exams. During office hours, you can ask specific questions about assignment goals, grading criteria, and what excellence truly looks like in their eyes.

  • Get personalized advice. What better way to understand how to excel in an assignment than asking the professor directly: "What's the best approach to this assignment from your perspective?" Even implementing just one aspect of their suggestion can significantly improve your work.

  • Build meaningful connections. Professors are not just instructors but potential mentors, recommendation letter writers, and valuable connections for your future career.

  • Receive career guidance. Use this time to discuss future professional plans, ask about graduate school, or explore potential career paths in the field.

  • Access networking opportunities. Professors often have extensive professional networks and can connect you with internships, research opportunities, or industry contacts.

How to make the most out of your office hours:

Come prepared with specific questions or topics you wish to discuss.

  1. Be respectful and show up on time, being mindful of when the session ends.

  2. Follow up. If a professor gives you advice, implement it and then update them on your progress.

  3. Schedule regular visits. Don't just go when you're struggling - establish a rapport throughout the semester.

Your future self (with those straight A's) will thank you!

with love,

Accepted Team
